For music producers: Mastering your production for Radio play

This is for all the music producers out there. We here at DJFM love to play music from up and coming artists who a lot of the time produce and master their own stuff.

In the past few days I have been playing with the sound processor to find that loud yet clean sound that radio stations go for. This is made very difficult by the quality of the mastering on some of the tracks coming in from the artists, even labels.
It has gotten to the point where some of the tracks can not be added to the playlist because of the way they are mastered.
If you are a producer looking to get your stuff played on the radio, no matter if it’s internet or conventional FM it is very, VERY important for you to understand how radio station processing works and what it does to your production work.

To shine a little light on it I have found this great article. It explains in great detail how about 99.9999% of audio processors process the sound at a radio station before it hits the transmitter, or in case of internet radio, the stream encoder.

I strongly suggest you read it and take it into consideration when producing your “radio edits”

Most Music Directors out there are quite aware of how their station’s processing works and will flat out refuse to add a track to the playlist if it means it will make their station sound like total crap.
